Is it just me or was this Spring semester hurled at us directly from the seventh layer of hell?!? I picture a little devil (literally, the devil I'm picturing is wee. And has a goatee that is waaaay over-manscaped.) with a little slingshot laughing his little butt off as we try to survive what has (at least for me) been a rooooough first two weeks back.
It's crazy, right?
It feels like the time we have in a day has simultaneously gotten longer AND shorter.
Like when I'm in class wishing I could be out of class because I have like 9 To-Do lists that I'm already currently juggling.... the hours feel like they've been streeeeeeetched over miles...but when I'm driving like a madwoman and cursing at any pedestrians who dare walk (not even in front of me...I'm just mad at all pedestrians all the time) whilst fighting the ultimate battle of "THAT PARKING SPOT IS MINE, I HAD MY BLINKER ON, DON'T YOU DARE I WILL WIN THIS YOU LITTLE ASSHOLE SLUG BUG! I WILL NOT BE LAAAATE"...the minutes fly by faster than...well something that's like really, really fast. Y'know?
Due to this enigma, this beast of a semester that's barely even begun to flex its claws...I think we should band together and make a list (I know, I'm not a huge fan of lists but I think this one is a little different. I think this one could keep us all just a little more sane. Listening?) A list of fabulous things to do to make a bad, busy, beastly day just a little bit better. Here are some things that I've come up with.
If you've got a minute:
-Throw on something that makes you feel lovely and take a freakin' selfie. The power that exists in a really good selfie could be JUST the thing to get you through that awful math quiz.
-Hug your dog or your cat or your favorite sweater. Find something soft and squeeze the hell out of it. It's a wonderful release of stress and a beautiful intake of love. Even from your sweater.
-Spritz yourself in a scent that makes you feel good, whatever 'good' you need to feel in that time. Find a perfume or cologne that makes you feel a)sexy b)invigorated c)delicious d)confident and spray it all over yourself. I promise you will smile.
-Eat something decadent. That can mean anything. Throw an apple in your bag and crunch into it while your stuck in traffic. You'll feel so healthy and juicy and awesome. OR. Stash a bag of your favorite totallyawfulforyou chips and revel in the "being bad never felt so good" mentality.
-Call your Mom. Or your Dad. Or your friend. Somebody that makes you feel safe. I don't know how many times I only have a few minutes on my brisk walk to class and I decide to spend them talking to my Mom and I feel sooooooo much better afterwords. Just that 2 minute bitch fest or that 30 second giggle fit can make you feel like a huge weight has been lifted off of your shoulders. And with the heavy ass book bags we have nowadays...wouldn't that be nice?
-Throw on a song that makes you go "YAAAAAS". Belt it in your car with the volume all the way up. Let it live inside you for a minute. Be encompassed with it's energy, it's beat. It's okay if you don't have enough time to listen to the whole thing...just get to that part in the chorus that you NAIL every time.
-Ladies (and fabulous gents) this is my biggest and bestest trick to feel amazing with only a second or so to spare. Lipstick. Put on your favorite lipstick. Dark, light, shimmery, matte, whateverrrrrrrrrrr. Put it on and feel AT LEAST 60% more fierce than you did before.
If you've got an hour:
-Take a bath. Seriously. 30 minutes. Extra bubbles. Cup of coffee. It's cheaper (and smells better) than therapy. Just do it.
(Coffee. Martini. Same diff.)
-Grab lunch with your best friend. Order something a little greasier than you would allow yourself if it was just you. Sit in a booth in the corner of the restaurant where it's nice and quiet and cozy. And catch up. Bitch. Sit and silence and shove your faces. Whatever. But being near somebody who just gets you will recharge you for the stupid night class you have later.
-Go to Target and buy yourself something you don't necessarily need but momentarily want. Just every now and then. We all drive past that seductive little minx of a store daily and say "NO. I CANNOT GO TO YOU, TARGET. I DO NOT NEED THAT ADORABLE PILLOW SET. I ALREADY HAVE EYELINER. I SHOULDN'T BUY THAT SKIRT." But sometimes, just sometimes, go in. Walk around. Get a coffee. And make a silly little purchase that makes you happy.
-Write in a journal. Just a quick scribble to release your jumbled up thoughts from your tired little brain. It'll clear some space and bring some clarity.
-Clean a little. I know, I know. Not as fun as the other items on the list. But your Mother was right when she told you that a clean house is a clean mind. I hatehatehate cleaning but holy shit do I feel so wonderful after I do. You look around at what was once your cluttered kitchen, your messy living room, and see the beautiful room you decorated like it's all shiny and new again. You'll be able to appreciate that vase in the corner and the scent of the candle just a little more. Doesn't that sound great?
If you've got a day:
-Sleep. Let's be real. Just let your body rest until it wants to wake up and then do any of the other things on this list for as long as you want. Or don't. It's your day. Revel in it.
These are just a few of my little techniques that I've crafted throughout the years. Try em' out. See if they have the same "hell yeah" vibe for you as they do for me.
Got any of your own 'musts' to get through a hard day? I'd love to hear!
xoxo,
Kelsey
